The production's development included a pre-Broadway sneak peek in Denver from August 17 to October 1, 2017. Broadway was graced with the musical’s presence as previews commenced on February 22, 2018, at the iconic St. James Theatre, followed by its grand debut on March 22, 2018. The production crew saw this endeavor as a chance to explore the roles' backstories and motivations. Consequently, a few dynamic action moments from the source material were trimmed, providing more time to center on the internal struggles of the figurines. As a result, the musical boasts a runtime of roughly twenty minutes longer than its cinematic original.
