One measure of a performance's triumph is its collection of Tony Awards, and Hadestown has several. Among 14 nominations it received for the 2019 Tony Awards, Hadestown clinched eight victories, including the much-coveted title of Best Musical. Furthermore, the production was honored with accolades for its captivating musical score by David Mitchell, the masterful direction of Rachel Chavkin, the standout performance by André De Shields, the innovative scenic design, the impressive sound design, the masterful lighting design, and the creative orchestrations.

In Anais Mitchell's reinterpretation of a Greek legend, Eurydice is presented as a young woman well-versed in navigating on her own in a world characterized by unpredictability, even in meteorological patterns. On the other hand, Orpheus is a fervent singer-songwriter brimming with emotions. Upon their first meeting, Eurydice is lured into an underworld factory, where Hades transforms his workers into mindless drones.

Orpheus embarks on a journey to retrieve her, and aided by his melodious tunes and Persephone (Hades' wife), he succeeds in bringing her back to his abode.

The cast is compact, consisting of just 13 members, who stay on the forefront for the majority of the show. The chorus consists of 5 cast members, who provide their singing and dancing in the background to heighten the vigor of the songs. Present in the cast the 3 Fates, who sing, converse, and interact with the characters. The full seven-piece band for "Hadestown" delivers the full performance while all excluding the drummer are visible on stage. The central protagonists encompass the deities Hades and Persephone, as well as Orpheus and his beloved Eurydice.

Entertainment Weekly showered accolades on the Broadway rendition, commenting, “When it comes to tales as ancient as time, the narratives of Greek mythology rank at the top, those epic stories of gods and mortals that have been recounted for centuries, inspiring endless interpretations. However, there's something remarkably current and fresh about the method those stories - those ancient ballads, those poignant ballads - are presented in Hadestown. As it debuts on Broadway, this voyage to the realm of the dead feels as though it's a completely new invention.”
